Desperate Vettel hands McLaren Turkish 1-2

Lewis Hamilton heads home Jenson Button after Red Bull drivers clash at Istanbul Park.

Lewis Hamilton headed McLaren team-mate Jenson Button to an unexpected 1-2 finish in the Turkish Grand Prix after Red Bull colleagues Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber contrived to throw away a similar result.

Hamilton spoke in Saturday’s post-qualifying press conference of being ready to take any opportunity that might allow him to take his first win of the season but, after losing an early second place to Vettel during the pit-stops, the Briton appeared destined for third place.

All that changed 18 laps from home, however, when Vettel, having closed on Webber, decided to chance his arm on the run into turn twelve. Having got alongside the Australian, Vettel’s car failed to fill the Red Bull-sized gap left by his team-mate and, edging right, made hard contact with its twin. Both cars headed into the copious run-off area, Vettel having spun several times, and narrowly avoided making secondary contact as Webber attempt to find his way back onto the track.

Vettel was out on the spot, clearly unhappy with what he felt was an error – a moment of madness – by his team-mate, but Webber was able to limp back into the action, eventually stopping for new tyres and front wing with the left-hand side of his car showing its battle scars.

Such was the leading quartet’s advantage over the rest of the field, the recovering Australian was able to stop and rejoin ahead of fourth-placed Michael Schumacher, the veteran no doubt having eyed his first podium since emerging from retirement, but the Red Bull was no longer a threat to the fleeing McLarens.

Incredibly, however, the two silver machines almost threatened their own chances of a second 1-2 this season. Just seven laps after seeing their main rivals disappear off-track, and having both been told to conserve fuel, Hamilton and Button continued to dispute the lead.

With rain finally appearing on their visors – having first been predicted on lap 20 – Button closed on his countryman and, approaching the same piece of track where Vettel and Webber had collided, moved to the outside. Holding his nerve, and with Hamilton sensibly holding his line, the reigning world champion managed to go the long way around into turn twelve, grabbing the inside for the switchback into 13 and then closing off Hamilton’s line for the final turn.

Hamilton, however, had already decided to improve his exit from the corner and, tucking back into Button’s wake, was able to pop out well before the start of lap 48, diving to the inside into turn one. The two touched briefly, but there was no repeat of the RBR outcome, and, amid further warnings about the state of their fuel consumption, Button backed away.

A little over three seconds split the two McLarens as Hamilton crossed the line to take the chequered flag and his first win of the season at a circuit where he starred in the GP2 Series. Webber crossed the line over 20secs further back, and the same trio now occupy the top three positions in the world championship, albeit in reverse order, with Webber enjoying a five-point margin over Button, with Hamilton a further four points adrift.

Button: McLaren have firepower to beat rivals

Jenson Button says Sepang probably won’t suit the McLaren MP4-25 as well as it will suit some of their rivals, but he still expects to be ‘fighting at or near the front’ during Sunday’s Malaysian GP.
Jenson Button believes the development race will start to have an influence this weekend in Malaysia and he is confident that McLaren will be able to deliver in this area during F1 2010 – just like that did last year.

Button, who of course won the last event in Australia following an inspired early switch from intermediates to slicks, added that the way the Woking-based outfit bounced back in 2009 was one of the main reasons he opted to join the team following his championship winning year with Brawn GP, now Mercedes.

“We’re only two races in, but I think the development race will already be starting to have an influence on performance. It’s the rate of improvement that will most influence the battle at the front,” he stated. “And I’m confident we can deliver in this area: it was something I watched the team doing throughout 2009, and it was one of the key reasons for deciding to hold talks with the team. I’m convinced we have the firepower to develop faster than our key rivals.”

Despite his success at Albert Park though, the 2009 World champion is slightly cagey about his prospects for the third round on the F1 2010 schedule. Indeed while he thinks the Sepang International Circuit will not play to the strengths of the MP4-25, he still adds that they should be able to challenge the likes of Red Bull, Ferrari and Mercedes.

“It was a tremendous achievement to score our first win of the season in Melbourne last week, and it’s given every single member of the team even greater enthusiasm for this weekend,” Button continued. “Even so though, I think we travel to Sepang mindful that the characteristics of the circuit probably won’t suit our car as well as it will suit some of the others – but I’m confident that, once again, we’ll be fighting at or near the front.

“Sepang is an awesome circuit, one that I love driving, and I think that I’ll be able to further develop and improve my relationship with the car here. It’s a circuit that not only requires smooth and precise input, but it also needs real commitment through some of the high-speed stuff. I think it’s a circuit that every driver loves.”

McLaren boss, Martin Whitmarsh meanwhile was delighted with Button’s form – and that of his team-mate, Lewis Hamilton – at Albert Park and he wants to see them both deliver again this Sunday.

“Every single member of this team worked tirelessly to put us in a position to win the Australian Grand Prix – and we were tremendously buoyed by both Jenson and Lewis’s incredible performances. As a result, we travel to Malaysia keen to maintain the level of competitiveness we demonstrated in Melbourne,” he added.

“We’re under no illusions that the regular pacesetters will once again be up at the front, but I think we’ve now shown that we’re a match for the competition – particularly with our race pace, which is up there with the very best.

“On a broader note, it was very satisfying to see F1 deliver such an invigorating and exciting race in Melbourne, and I hope that this weekend’s race can continue that trend. It’s a circuit that delivers natural spectacle and is one of the best places in the world for watching grand prix cars at high-speed. It looks like we have all the ingredients for a classic season,” he concluded.

Vettel cruises to Abu Dhabi victory

http://pix.crash.net/motorsport/360/AU564062.jpg

Sebastian Vettel secured a third grand prix victory of 2009 to close out Red Bull Racing’s most successful campaign with a comfortable win in the inaugural race at Yas Marina in Abu Dhabi.

The German was already looking likely to emerge ahead of polesitter Lewis Hamilton at the first round of pit-stops when the 2008 world champion was forced to retire with a rear brake problem and, with the McLaren gone, cruised to a winning margin approaching 20 seconds,

Behind the German, RBR team-mate Mark Webber and new world champion Jenson Button staged a thrilling finale to an otherwise uneventful race by duelling over second place. The Briton, who had started fifth, closed relentlessly on his Australian rival until they were nose to tail for the final few laps, but Webber had just enough in hand to confirm a 1-2 for Red Bull, which completed a hat-trick of victories to end the season.

Rubens Barrichello, after losing parts of his front wing in a first corner clash with Webber, came home a lonely fourth after just beating BMW Sauber’s Nick Heidfeld out of the pits after their respective second stops, while the German’s fifth place was enough to elevate the departing BMW team one place to sixth in the constructors’ table.

Kamui Kobayashi enhanced his chances of clinching a full-time ride with Toyota after finishing sixth on the road in only his second grand prix with the Cologne-based team, coming home ahead of team-mate Jarno Trulli and Toro Rosso’s Sebastien Buemi.
