Desperate Vettel hands McLaren Turkish 1-2

Lewis Hamilton heads home Jenson Button after Red Bull drivers clash at Istanbul Park.

Lewis Hamilton headed McLaren team-mate Jenson Button to an unexpected 1-2 finish in the Turkish Grand Prix after Red Bull colleagues Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber contrived to throw away a similar result.

Hamilton spoke in Saturday’s post-qualifying press conference of being ready to take any opportunity that might allow him to take his first win of the season but, after losing an early second place to Vettel during the pit-stops, the Briton appeared destined for third place.

All that changed 18 laps from home, however, when Vettel, having closed on Webber, decided to chance his arm on the run into turn twelve. Having got alongside the Australian, Vettel’s car failed to fill the Red Bull-sized gap left by his team-mate and, edging right, made hard contact with its twin. Both cars headed into the copious run-off area, Vettel having spun several times, and narrowly avoided making secondary contact as Webber attempt to find his way back onto the track.

Vettel was out on the spot, clearly unhappy with what he felt was an error – a moment of madness – by his team-mate, but Webber was able to limp back into the action, eventually stopping for new tyres and front wing with the left-hand side of his car showing its battle scars.

Such was the leading quartet’s advantage over the rest of the field, the recovering Australian was able to stop and rejoin ahead of fourth-placed Michael Schumacher, the veteran no doubt having eyed his first podium since emerging from retirement, but the Red Bull was no longer a threat to the fleeing McLarens.

Incredibly, however, the two silver machines almost threatened their own chances of a second 1-2 this season. Just seven laps after seeing their main rivals disappear off-track, and having both been told to conserve fuel, Hamilton and Button continued to dispute the lead.

With rain finally appearing on their visors – having first been predicted on lap 20 – Button closed on his countryman and, approaching the same piece of track where Vettel and Webber had collided, moved to the outside. Holding his nerve, and with Hamilton sensibly holding his line, the reigning world champion managed to go the long way around into turn twelve, grabbing the inside for the switchback into 13 and then closing off Hamilton’s line for the final turn.

Hamilton, however, had already decided to improve his exit from the corner and, tucking back into Button’s wake, was able to pop out well before the start of lap 48, diving to the inside into turn one. The two touched briefly, but there was no repeat of the RBR outcome, and, amid further warnings about the state of their fuel consumption, Button backed away.

A little over three seconds split the two McLarens as Hamilton crossed the line to take the chequered flag and his first win of the season at a circuit where he starred in the GP2 Series. Webber crossed the line over 20secs further back, and the same trio now occupy the top three positions in the world championship, albeit in reverse order, with Webber enjoying a five-point margin over Button, with Hamilton a further four points adrift.

Button wins Turkish Grand Prix

http://pix.crash.net/motorsport/360/PA600399.jpg

Jenson Button took another small step towards a world title tilt by winning the Turkish Grand Prix in unexpectedly comfortable fashion ahead of his Red Bull rivals.

The Briton disposed on polewinner – and pre-race favourite – Sebastian Vettel after the young German made a mistake on the opening lap, and was never seriously troubled thereafter, stretching out an immediate gap and eventually coming home …. seconds to the good for his sixth win in seven races.

Vettel’s race went from bad to worse as his light qualifying weight counted for little. The Red Bull team kept him on a three-stop strategy in a bid to catch Button – and he did indeed close up in his second stint – but the ploy eventually dropped him behind RBR team-mate Mark Webber, with the German ‘advised’ to settle to third in the closing stages.

Second equalled Webber’s best career result, even though the Australian will rue having been caught behind Jarno Trulli on the opening lap, while the Italian gave Toyota something to enjoy after its Monaco nightmare by claiming fourth place.

Nico Rosberg, Felipe Massa, Robert Kubica and Timo Glock all collected points – the Pole for the first time this season – as Rubens Barrichello posted the Brawn team’s first retirement and neither McLaren troubled the scorers after another poor show in qualifying. Kimi Raikkonen also left Istanbul without anything to show for his efforts in stifling heat, finishing ninth in the second Ferrari.

Button wins Monaco GP

http://pix.crash.net/motorsport/360/PA591968.jpg

Jenson Button made it five wins from six grand prix starts in 2009 by cruising to victory on the streets of Monaco at the head of another Brawn GP 1-2.

The Briton was seldom troubled after making a good start from pole position, aided by team-mate Rubens Barrichello getting a blinder from P3 to jump ahead of front row starter Kimi Raikkonen and prevent the Ferrari driver from benefitting from being able to use his KERS to take the lead. Despite the Brawns being more heavily fuelled than the Finn, Button and Barrichello pulled away over the early laps, cementing the British team’s path to victory.

Although Button was unable to hold the lead throughout, with the likes of Raikkonen, team-mate Felipe Massa and Williams’ Nico Rosberg all taking turns at the front during the various pit-stop windows, there was little doubt that victory would come his way unless fate intervened.

Barrichello came under greater pressure as Ferrari’s resurgence allowed both Raikkonen and Massa to become podium threats, but the Brazilian was ultimately able to back Button up in the third Brawn 1-2 of the year.

While nemesis McLaren’s weekend went from bad to worse with Heikki Kovalainen’s exit against the Swimming Pool barriers, Ferrari held on to secure a season’s best third and fourth, while Mark Webber, Rosberg, Fernando Alonso and Sebastien Bourdais claimed the remaining points positions.

Rosberg had earlier made a daring move to pass Massa when the Brazilian was forced to back off and allow Sebastian Vettel through after overtaking the German by cutting the seafront chicane, but was not a threat after dropping away from a high of fourth. Webber thus proved to be Ferrari’s biggest threat but, despite posting some of the fastest laps of the race, the Australian could not sustain his pace consistently and had to settle for fifth.

Alonso’s decision to run long from the start did not pay dividends for Renault, while Bourdais had enough in hand to keep Giancarlo Fisichella at bay and deny Force India some measure of recompense after Adrian Sutil’s 2008 disappointment. The German was never a factor this time around, and brought up the rear of the field, three places behind former F3 team-mate Lewis Hamilton, who only recovered to 13th from his rear of the grid start.
